You do this in an expansive story mode, encapsulating a good 100 missions (read: fights). Your mission? Clear Shun Ying's name by, it appears, beating the living expletive out of the Zaps and pretty much every other gang roaming around downtown. Shun Ying Lee, the sultry Chinese woman who the Zaps suspect to be behind the kidnapping, hires you instead. Someone's kidnapped KG, a member of the Zaps (one of the local gangs) who frankly has the words "pummel me, I'm a walking target" written all over his face. Urban Reign puts you in the shoes of Brad Hawk, tough-as-nails street brawler and Matrix-wannabe who may or may not have a heart of gold. Part wrestling game, part old-school beat-'em-up, part Tekken meets Boyz n the Hood, Urban Reign is a textbook example of a game trying to be too many things at once and ending up as very little of anything at all. On the other hand, it also tries to be "hip" and "edgy," causing the whole effort to fall relatively flat on its face. My point is: Urban Reign, for better or worse, hearkens back to the days of games passed, days where "Winners Don't Do Drugs" was emblazoned proudly on the attract mode of every game in the arcade. Games like Grand Theft Auto, Manhunt, and 80 other games all inevitably made by Rockstar personify improper behavior, endorsing violence and drugs instead of, for example, fighting drugs by punching them in the face with a rocket launcher. Nowadays, the focus seems to have shifted more towards pure violence, sex, and shock value, leaving behind the subtle, sometimes confusing or cheesy nuances of games like NARC (the old arcade game, not the recent PS2 mess) and Streets of Rage for games that, instead of fighting the bad guy, allow the player to become the bad guy. Additionally, the characters from Tekken, Paul Phoenix and Marshall Law, are unlockable characters.Long ago, the big offenders in video games were drugs and gangs, especially in the early '90s, when anti-drug awareness was at its peak. Initially, it is not possible for two players to play through the single player missions together (unless unlocked with a cheat code at the title screen), but once unlocked, the game includes game modes for multiplayer action, including four-player brawls with a PlayStation 2 multi-tap and extra controllers. The meter is expended when a move is pulled off, and increases when characters take damage, successfully dodge attacks, or strike their opponents with attacks. Characters have a "special arts meter" that must be at a certain level for a move to be attempted. Special arts cannot be countered, reversed or dodged except by another special move, and they can be buffered. Finally, "special arts" can be pulled off with a press of two buttons. Even when cornered by multiple enemies, it is possible to dodge all oncoming normal attacks. Also, if the player presses up or down on the keypad while pressing dodge at the correct time, his character will reverse an attack, if possible. Neutralizing attacks by opponents is done with a single button press that must be timed to the moment of the attack. Then the player has the choice of an air grapple, special move, simply continuing the combo or running away to pick up a weapon or reposition. Although characters have optimal combo strings, most combos start with three presses of the attack button, the third of which will juggle an opponent. There are low and high grapples, air grapples, counters and recounters each with its own animations for each character. The characters can move in the environment, pick up weapons, throw objects, give instructions to AI partners, and pull off moves on multiple opponents. Gameplay Urban Reign features both single player and multiplayer action with both multiple AI opponents and human controlled characters on the same screen fighting at the same time. Because this type of foam can be sprayed directly onto the surfaces that contribute to heat loss, they work well when insulating difficult, high-heat-loss areas of the house, such as the eaves and band joist. One such product, DOW Building Solutions FROTH-PAK™ Foam Insulation, is a two-component, low-pressure polyurethane spray foam that expands to fill cavities, penetrations, and cracks greater than 2”. Don’t use standard foam it is apt to expand to the point that it bends the jambs and causes window and doors to bind.įor the most ambitious, two-part foam kits that blow the thick, expansive material that professional foaming contractors use to insulate whole houses is an option. If you feel up to doing the work, you can remove the casing around windows and exterior doors and spray low-pressure foam into the gap between the jambs and wood framing. Next, with the power off, remove all electrical interior wall plates for switches and outlets and install thin foam gaskets to stop infiltration. If there’s enough space to accommodate the tip of the caulk cartridge or the nozzle of the foam sealant, also plug the holes (called knockouts) where wires enter junction boxes. Apply caulk or expanding foam sealant into the holes. If the attic is unfinished, make sure that the power is off and pull up the insulation surrounding the places where plumbing and wiring penetrate the top plate of the walls below. Remove ceiling light fixtures, heat registers, and bathroom fan covers so that you can caulk the spaces between them and the ceiling drywall. To plug the holes between the attic and the rooms below, begin by shutting off the power with the appropriate circuit breakers. Also, warm household air rises and creates a "chimney effect": the rising warm air exits through leaks in the attic while cold air enters through lower leaks, such as around the front door. Cold air can blow right through most insulation, and leaks to the interior through recessed ceiling lights, bathroom fans, and heat registers are likely. Attic insulation works to lower thermal transfer, but it has relatively little effect on airflow. Even insulation in the attic doesn’t guarantee a sufficient air barrier. They typically have large openings for ventilation and yet aren’t sealed off from the living space below. You’d lose no time in fixing this leak, but air infiltration is much less likely to get our attention.Īttics are the leakiest part of the house. In the interior of your home, it helps to picture air infiltration as water seeping into your house through small leaks and then dripping onto the dining room table. It’s a very effective sealer but it can also expand so much that it makes an ugly, foamy mess on your beautiful siding. Apply a carefully aimed caulking gun around the penetration, but be careful when using expanding foam insulation. The easiest place to do this is on the exterior of the house during construction, but you can still improve an existing home by inspecting the exterior walls and sealing penetrations, especially where pipes come into the house, such as at meter locations. Sealing is all about plugging those holes and cracks. Indirect leaks occur where air penetrates the exterior at one location and the interior at another, such as where warm, indoor air is sucked through plugs and switch plates and into the cold attic.

Carp (Ian Barford), is missing in action, along with the minutes of the last meeting. Peel, the city council freshman who has questions about the last city council meeting, primarily because one of his colleagues, a Mr. The Minutes has been cast with a mix of Steppenwolf and Broadway actors-plus Noah Reid, late of Schitt’s Creek and the Hammer replacement, who plays a Mr. Letts wrote this play during the 2016 political campaign at the first flicker of Trumpism, and you can sense his blood boiling. It’s a satire of small-town bureaucracy that grows progressively darker as it careens toward a frenzied finale. These days you’ll find both Letts in full sway at Studio 54 in The Minutes, a 2018 Pulitzer finalist and a 2022 Best Play Tony contender. A friend of mine calls it ‘crop rotation.’” I don’t really consider myself more one than the other. “Whenever I’m writing, I think, ‘Oh, God! It would be nice just to be an actor right now and not have to worry about all the things people will say and do.’ Then, when I’m acting, I think, ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be nice to be writing alone in my office?’ I’m very fortunate that I can do both. “I’ve done them both so long now I don’t know which one takes precedence over the other,” he admits. I’m glad the playwright tries something new here, even if the fireworks don’t go off as planned.Letts may be best known right now as an actor-he’s burning up the tracks on stage and screen-but personally the 56-year-old Oklahoman finds the two roles mesh together seamlessly. “August: Osage County,” “Bug” and “Linda Vista” all flirted with issues, but didn’t go there like his latest does. Shapiro, is a more pointedly political play from Letts than usual. Carp (Ian Barford), whose chair mysteriously sits empty for much of the hour and a half. The secret of that document, we quickly learn, lies with Mr. Jeremy DanielĪnd Noah Reid of “Schitt’s Creek” ( who replaced Armie Hammer) sticks in everybody’s craw as a doe-eyed, but not-so-gullible new member of the council, who was absent from the last meeting and keeps demanding to see the minutes. The hilarious actor’s outbursts and erratic pacing are perfection. Oldfield can barely hear and harps on his need for a better parking place. Hanratty.įunniest of all is Austin Pendleton, whose Mr. Matz, is played by Sally Murphy and Danny McCarthy as schlub-next-door Mr. Assalone the germaphobe who’s probably a cat lady, Ms. Breeding Jeff Still is the chronically mispronounced Mr. Blake, who has a hilarious plan to bring money to the city the always excellent Blair Brown is the vindictive Ms. Tony-award winner Jessie Mueller is the stoic clerk K. (Nothing is scarier than the ferocious Letts calling a meeting to order.) He and nine others sit behind microphones airing petty grievances that spiral into seriousness. Letts - who’s America’s finest playwright/actor combo since Sam Shepard - appears in his play as the strict, rule-obsessed Mayor Superba. Mayor Superba (Tracy Letts, center) leads the city council meeting, alongside Mr. Nonetheless the journey there is a mighty enjoyable one, filled with crackling dialogue, strong-willed Steppenwolf Theater performances and Letts’ compelling argument: that even the most minuscule of historical accounts, like say a meeting’s minutes, are essential to understanding what happened in the past. While the conclusion admirably indicts the behavior of tony, solid-blue suburbs, it concerns an issue that America has grappled with for centuries.Īdding to the old-hat vibe, the controversial final moment (one queasy woman ran out of the theater) believes that it’s bolder and more thought-provoking than it really is. And the truth is more obvious than we had hoped. Our high wears off, however, once we get our answer near the end of the play. The long-lasting uncertainty of what genre “The Minutes” is makes Letts’ work, which opened Sunday night at Studio 54, a supremely clever piece of writing. Our theories of what’s actually going on at this city council meeting in the town of Big Cherry run the gamut: murder, aliens, cult worship, or just an old fashioned Broadway comedy. There’s a ton of happiness to be found in what you’re doing with your life and and Quik helps you bring that to the forefront.” You don’t have to find happiness in what other people are doing. “This is the cosmic moment where I point to the deeper meaning behind what it is that we’re doing for people with Quik, because I think we’re really going to help people develop a stronger sense of self-esteem, self-worth, and ultimately happiness. But damn it, man, you can get a lot of inspiration from just looking at what you’ve been doing with your life. “Not to bash on social feeds, like there’s a lot of good from them, we get a lot of inspiration from what other people are doing. “I think that what we’re solving for people is like a very relatable and widespread problem” But with Quik, Woodman sees not just a great business opportunity or a chance to reach new customers. GoPro has carved out a decent supplemental business so far with its Plus subscription service, with nearly 800,000 paying subscribers as of the end of 2020 (the equivalent of just shy of roughly $40 million of annual revenue). “I think that what we’re solving for people is like a very relatable and widespread problem: I don’t have a convenient, private place to put content that matters most to me, and you know what, sharing it to your Instagram feed ain’t working because there’s that tension of, ‘Well, this matters to me, but I know it’s not going to really matter to anybody that I would socialize it with.’” “It can be all of those things,” he says. Others will just use it for their GoPro footage and photos and nothing else. That said, Woodman thinks people may use the feed in all sorts of ways, like saving images that inspire them or for planning a project, a la Pinterest. The more attractive option, in Woodman’s eyes, is to add photos and videos you take on the fly using the share sheet every time you capture a “keeper.” (Users can also text or email photos to the mural feed.) One is fairly straightforward: after you open the Quik app and give it access to your camera roll, you can scroll through and add photos to the mural feed or to “events” (not albums, of course) on the feed. Users can build out the mural feed in the Quik app a few different ways. Hey honey, let’s AirPlay our album to the TV and kick back and reminisce.’ You don’t do that.” “You don’t go into albums ‘This is going to be a super awesome experience. Albums are just miniature camera rolls,” he says. While he doesn’t expect all of those users to pony up for the paid version of the new app, he thinks many will appreciate the mural feature because he still doesn’t see any good solutions to that camera roll clutter problem - especially not albums. And it worked: Woodman says that app still had “roughly eight million monthly active users” despite having been essentially abandoned by the company. In fact, that was the strategy with the original Quik app, which let users mash together photos and videos from their camera roll without requiring the use of a GoPro. And by gearing the app at a wider audience, not just GoPro users, he thinks there’s great opportunity to be had. Woodman sees the new Quik app as something of a culmination of a yearslong effort at GoPro to diversify away from hardware that started around 20. Customers who already pay for GoPro’s Plus subscription service (which includes unlimited cloud storage, live-streaming functionality, and camera replacement) will get Quik’s features for free. GoPro is charging $1.99 per month or $9.99 per year for those features, though the basic camera connection and control side the app will remain free to use for people who don’t want to pay for the new stuff. It also has a few other features like a video editing suite (including a speed adjustment tool), themes and filters, and unlimited original quality cloud backup of everything posted to the mural feed. The auto-editing feature will live on in the new app, which launches on iOS and Android today.
